1st Steps in the News

Since 1st Steps Linedancing started in 2001, we have been very active in the community and also have helped to raise funds for charity.

You can read a brief history of our fund-raising events further, down, but first - find out what we've been up to recently.

Spring/Summer 2007 - £10,000 raised!

Our most recent event, in Spring/Summer 2007, raised £10,000 for the Stoke Mandeville and Queen Charlotte's SCBUs, in gratitude for their role in saving the life of baby Aedhan. Read his story below.

The major event in this fund-raising effort was when the fabulous Glenn Rogers generously gave a free performance to swell the funds. At this gig we had the largest raffle I've ever seen, and an auction with some amazing 'lots', including generous donations of a hat by Bobby D Sawyer, and a set of CDs from Alan Gregory - two more club favourites. Other high-lights included sponsored line-dancing, a sponsored slim and many cash contributions.

Charity Linedance for Cancer Research - Saturday 19th February 2005 Tithe Farm Social Club, Rayners Lane

Over 100 dancers and non dancers attended our afternoon and evening non stop linedance sessions to raise money for Cancer Research. At each session we danced for 2 hours followed by raffle, games and an auction. We also had collecting boxes on the tables and on the day raised a fantastic £756.35. This total does not include the money people have raised for the sponsored non stop linedance - what wonderful, generous people they all are! We have now raised £10,000.00!

Our first major fundraising event was for Macmillan Nurses, and with a non-stop Linedance evening, we raised a staggering £2,000.00, which made all the hard work worthwhile.  Everyone was thrilled at the amount.

We then sold badges for Breast Cancer, which brought in £200.00.

In 2004 the
Osteoporosis Society came along to one of our class nights and screened people for the disease in an attempt to take action before the disease became apparent.  I was told that I was borderline and should start taking calcium supplements.  I was also told that if I wasn’t Linedancing so often, they would advise further treatment.  Linedancing builds up bone density because it is low impact – we learn something every day!

For
Christmas 2003 we raised approximately £50 for the Breast Cancer Campaign through selling charity Christmas cards, it is not a huge amount, but everything helps.

We don’t just raise money for individual charities.  We have supported Harrow Council and danced in Harrow Town Centre and have also supported our local Lions in their efforts to raise funds for charities.

We are very proud of our dancers and the effort they put in to helping other people and very much look forward to our next event – please watch this space!
